Jean Elsen sale 140, lot 1043

This specimen was lot 1043 in Jean Elsen sale 140 (Brussels, March 2019), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,730 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, PIACENZA, Alexandre Farnèse, duc de Parme (1586-1592), AV scudo, 1597AP. Frappe posthume. D/ B. dr. et cuir. à g. Avec légende fautive DVX II (au lieu de DVX III). R/ PLACEN ROMAN COLON Allégorie de Plaisance deb. de f., ten. un lis et une corne d'abondance. A g., le dieu du Pô déversant son urne. Très rare Bel exemplaire sur flan large. Double frappe au revers. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Piacenza, Alexander Farnese, duke of Parma, 1586-92, silver scudo of 1597, posthumous strike. Obverse: draped and armored bust to left with erroneous legend; reverse: allegorical figure of pleasure stands facing, bearing a lily and a cornucopia, behind, the river god Po pours water from an urn. Very rare, nice example on a large planchet, double struck on the reverse. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

The duchy of Piacenza was united with the duchy of Parma in the eighteenth century. This type was struck 1589-93 and 1595-99. There is also a double scudo (Dav-8357).
