The specimen shown is a nickel plated steel peso of the current circulating series. This piece has a face value (May 2014) of about two cents and was first issued in 1995. It was converted from copper-nickel to nickel plated steel in 2003. The obverse is the portrait is of Dr. José Rizal, whose martyrdom was the spark of the independence movement against Spain in 1898.

Specification: 5.4 g, nickel plated steel, 24 mm diameter.
