These notes, issues of the Philippine National Bank, were printed at the United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Two peso notes exist dated 1918 and 1921 (shown). The portrait is of José Rizal, martyr of the struggle for independence from the Spanish. The signatures are of S. Mercado and Miguel Union. During the American rule, the Philippine peso was fixed at fifty cents U. S. Other denominations include one peso (Chas. Conant), five pesos (McKinley), ten pesos (Washington), twenty pesos (Wm. A. Jones), fifty pesos (Lawton), one hundred pesos (Magellan). The last issue was five, ten and twenty pesos of 1937. They were withdrawn in 1948 and demonetized in 1949.
