Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74354
SB1123-74354r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 43810 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. Octavo, 1773-M M. Charles III (1759-88). PCGS VF-30 Gold Shield. VERY RARE early date. Typical crude manufacture. Far nicer than normally encountered, though slightly uneven. Slightly mis-aligned dies with a partial four digit date. Semi-glossy with attractive patina. A wholesome problem free example with good honest wear. An exciting piece sure to see interest from many collectors. From the Ray Czahor Collection. Purchased privately from Karl Stephens, c. 1986." The second specimen was lot 74354 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $10,800. The catalog description[2] noted, "Beautiful and Rare Philippine Colonial Octavo, PHILIPPINES. Octavo, 1773-M M. Manila Mint. Charles III. PCGS EF-45. A VERY RARE example from the first date of this three-year type. The single finest out of just three examples graded by either PCGS or NGC, this piece offers advanced collectors an exciting opportunity. Impressively well-centered, this piece displays full peripheral legends including a clear date. The excellent state of preservation allows one to admire all of the central details, such as the charmingly abstract castles and lions on the royal arms. A lovely chocolate-brown patina coats the whole coin rather evenly. An exceptional and problem-free coin that is certain to attract attention when it crosses the auction block." The Manila mint was little better than a smithy prior to the 1860's. This octavo and its accompanying quarto are not particularly rare but very difficult to find in collectible condition, being crudely made and harshly used. This type is listed for 1773 and 1782-83. This specimen realized sixteen times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.
