Pfalz 1708-IL thaler Dav-2527
This specimen was lot 31055 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $10,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Pfalz-Electoral. Johann Wilhelm Taler 1708-IL MS64+ NGC. The first of this scarce type we have handled, a glorious cabinet piece that seemingly bears all the prerequisites of a Gem designation. The motifs are nearly untouched, still shining with bloom at the highpoints, while an even patina ignites with brilliant rainbow tones at the peripheries, a quality combination that invokes centuries worth of care and maintenance. Ex. Köhlmoos Collection (Münzen & Medaillen AG Basel Auction 91, March 2001, Lot 433); Dr. Busso Peus Nachfolger Auction 338 (May 1994, Lot 2212). From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." This is a very rare one year type.
Wikipedia comments,
"Johann Wilhelm II, Elector Palatine (1658 – 1716) of the Wittelsbach dynasty was Elector Palatine (1690–1716), Duke of Neuburg (1690–1716), Duke of Jülich and Berg (1679–1716), and Duke of Upper Palatinate and Cham (1707–1714). From 1697 onwards Johann Wilhelm was also Count of Megen."
The Palatinate's proximity to France meant that it was invaded and devastated several times by the armies of Louis XIV, possibly explaining the rarity of his thalers. Johann Wilhelm spent much of his reign in Jülich and Berg, closer to the Netherlands.
