Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72401

This specimen was lot 72401 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Sol, 2013. Lima Mint. NGC PROOF-68 Ultra Cameo. Displaying a sharp strike and nearly flawless Ultra Cameo appearance, this wholesome specimen yields much charm and appeal to the eyes." In 1991, the currency was reformed, one nuevo sol = one million intis. This denomination was used for numerous commemoratives in 2013, including KM 366, KM 368, KM 370 (shown here), KM 371, KM 372, KM 373, KM 374, KM 375 and KM 376. Most featured various natural or archeological wonders of Peru. Some were struck in copper-nickel-zinc, others in silver, as here. This one honors the 150th anniversary of the introduction of the sol as a coin, which decimalized the currency.
