Peru 1863-YB 1/5 sol

CNG Lissner collection, lot 2092

from the Mountain Groan Collection

The first specimen was lot 2092 in Classical Numismatic Group's auction of the Richard Lissner collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $393.25. The catalog description^[1] noted, "PERU, Republic. 1821-present. AR 1/5 Sol. Lima mint. Dated 1863 YB. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 66. Superb toned iridescent gem. First year of this type." This quinto was struck 1863-75 in Lima, Peru. Most dates are readily available. Varieties and overdates abound. A later type, with a slightly different figure of seated Liberty, was struck 1888-1917 (KM 205). The type was replaced by a copper-nickel twenty centavos in 1918.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: 5 g, 0.900 fine silver, the first specimen Ø18 mm, 4.92 g, 6h axis.
