This specimen was lot 25310 in Heritage sale 61487 (Dallas, TX, May 2025), where it sold for $5,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru. Elusive and Finest 1862 8 Escudos. Republic gold 8 Escudos 1862 LIMA-YB AU58 NGC, Lima mint. A most impressive piece and the first year of this fleeting 2-year "Seated Liberty" series. Dressed in a uniform, harvest tone throughout and ample residual luster, precluded from a coveted Mint State assignment by trivial handling. While examples of 1863 and the 1863/2 overdate are witnessed somewhat regularly at any level of preservation, those of the inaugural date are rare at best, with only two others appearing at major auction in as many decades, the last in 2008 and the Eliasberg specimen, an AU53, in 2005. Of the six examples currently certified by both grading services, the example at hand remains the sole finest and certainly bound for an advanced cabinet as such. Accompanied by the original collector envelope. From the Monedero Collection of Peru and Latin American Coins." The second specimen was lot 1252 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[2] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold 8 escudos, 1862 YB, NGC AU details / cleaned, ex-Almenara. Rich gold color and nice luster despite hairlines and handling marks, traces of adjustment marks to right of denomination, rare first year of a scarce two-year type. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection (stated on label)." This type was struck 1862-63 during the transition to decimal coinage, wherein the sol superseded the peso.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27 g, 0.875 fine gold, .759 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 183, Fr-68, Onza-2102 (Rare).
