This specimen was lot 3442 in Stephen Album sale 39 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $78. The catalog description[1] noted, "PENANG: AE 2 cents, 1828, East India Company Issue, 27 flowers, a few rim bumps, F-VF." The type was struck in 1825 and 1828 while Penang was a trading station of the East India Company and is scarce in nice condition. Varieties exist with differing numbers of lily cups. The smooth finish and sharp strike suggests that it was made in Birmingham, not locally. Later issues were struck for the Straits Settlements, centered on Singapore.
Recorded Mintage: 720,000.
Specification: copper.
Catalog reference: KM-16 (Malay Peninsula).
