Patiala (1765-81) mohur
This specimen was lot 31386 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "Patiala. Amar Singh gold Mohur Frozen Year 4 (AH 1179-1196 / AD 1765-1781) MS65 PCGS. Citing the Durrani ruler Ahmad Shah. Undeniably deserving of its lofty gem designation, the centering superb when considering the spatial limitations of the flan, and the just visible floral group of pellets to the left of the julus formula indicating an earlier issue of Amar Singh, rather than the 19th-century attribution on the holder." This expensive type was struck by the independent rajah of Patiala, Ahmad Singh. The state was annexed by Britain in 1845 but stayed loyal during the Mutiny. This example sold for less than half its catalog value.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 10.77 g, gold, 14 mm diameter.
