Stack's Bowers May 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 33533
SB524-33533r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33533 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAPUA NEW GUINEA. 5 Kina, 1994. NGC PROOF-67 Ultra Cameo. Struck to commemorate the centennial of the popular bird-of-paradise coinage of German New Guinea." The German colony of New Guinea, established in 1884, fell to the Australians in 1914 and was held by them until 1975, when the area became part of Papua New Guinea. This is an homage to the five mark of 1894 issued by the Germans for the colony. Mineral wealth abounds but the climate and terrain are harsh and the country remains poor.

Recorded mintage: 7,500.

Specification: 27.78 g, 0.900 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-37.
