Stephen Album sale 37, lot 1836
SA37-1836r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1836 in Stephen Album sale 37 (Santa Rosa, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $190.40. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAPAL STATES: Pius IX, 1846-1878, AR 5 baiocchi, 1865 year XX, a superb quality example with light toning! PCGS graded MS66, ex Wolfgang Schuster Collection." This type was struck at Rome and Bologna 1847-66. Until 1865, it was struck in 0.800 fine silver. This debasement forced the other countries of the Latin Monetary Union (especially France) to debase their silver minors as well. This date also comes with year XIX. Another coinage reform in 1866 dropped the scudo in favor of the lira used in the rest of the kingdom of Italy.

Recorded mintage: 106,370 including year XIX.

Specification: 17 mm diameter, 1.34 g, 0.835 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-1341a, Gig-164 (year XX), Ber-3320.
