This specimen was lot 472 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 1,000 € (about US$1,306 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "* Papal States. 1848. Pius IX. R (Roma). 2,50 escudos. Ding. Nice. Scarce. AU. EBC+ [choice extremely fine]." The first coinage reform in the Papal States was implemented in the early 1830's during the reign of Gregory XVI (1831-46). All the doppie, zecchini, guili, testoni, etc., were dropped in favor of a silver scudo divided into one hundred baiocchi. Gold one, 2½, five and ten scudi were minted at Rome and Bologna until 1865. This type struck for Pius IX 1848 and 1853-63 carried on the standard of Gregory XVI. This specimen is from the Rome mint. Despite the tiny mintage, it is not awarded a premium in the SCWC.
Recorded mintage: 3,197.
