Papal States 1838-R 10 scudi
This specimen was lot 745 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 1,700 CHF (about US$2,256 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN, KIRCHENSTAAT. Gregor XVI. 1831-1846. 10 Scudi 1838 / Anno VIII R, Roma. Gutes vorzüglich. (Papal States, Gregory XVI, 1831-46, ten scudi of 1838, year 8, Rome mint. Good extremely fine.)"
The first coinage reform in the Papal States was implemented in the early 1830's during the reign of Gregory XVI (1831-46). All the doppie, zecchini, guili, testoni, etc., were dropped in favor of a silver scudo divided into one hundred baiocchi. Gold one, 2½, five and ten scudi were minted at Rome and Bologna until 1865.
