Papal States 1801 baioccho rev Tom F.jpg
Steve Album sale 51, lot 1111

This type is listed for 1801 only and was struck in Rome. It is among the last copper coins struck before French annexation. Another baiocco listed for 1801 (KM 1266) uses a different reverse and considerably scarcer. The early coinage of the Papal States used an antique monetary system. After 1830, five quattrini = one baiocco; 100 baiocchi = one scudo. In 1866, the currency was reformed to use centesimi and lire in order to match that of the surrounding kingdom of Italy. In 1870, the Papal States were occupied and annexed by the kingdom of Italy and coinage ceased until 1929. The second specimen was lot 1111 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAPAL STATES: Pius VII, 1800-1823, AE baiocco, 1801, a lovely partial red lustrous mint state example! PCGS graded MS63 BN. A likely pattern issue with obverse legend VN BAIOC and unusual style of Roman numerals." The "CIϽCICCCCI" date on the second specimen is a variety mentioned in Numista but not in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.86 g, copper.

Catalog reference: KM 1262, Ber-3236.
