Papal States 1774 2 giulio
This type was minted 1774 only prior to the election of the new pope Pius VI. The doppio giulio was twenty baiocchi, while the scudo was one hundred baiocchi. The third specimen was lot 1610 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,706 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Sedisvakanz 1774. 1/5 Scudo (Doppio Giulio) 1774, Rom. Feine Patina, vorzüglich. (Papal States, sede vacante, one-fifth scudo or double giulio of 1774, Rome mint. Fine patina, extremely fine.)"
This type is not listed in the SCWC as rare but this example sold for 22 times the catalog value.
