Jean Elsen sale 132, lot 611

This specimen was lot 611 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €130 (about US$165 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Innocent XI (1676-1689), (Benedetto Odescalchi), AR teston, 1686, an 10, Rome. D/ Ecu dans un cartouche orné, sous la tiare et les clés de saint Pierre. R/ Dans un cartouche orné: MELIVS/ EST DARE/ QVAM/ ACCIPERE. Très Beau. (Italy, Pontifical State, Innocent XI (1676-89), silver testone of 1686, year 10, Rome mint. Obverse: ornate arms, crossed keys and tiara above; reverse: motto in ornate cartouche. Very fine.)"

This type was minted in 1686 for Innocent XI. The SCWC lists four different testone for 1686, varying in the design of the cartouche on the reverse. The testone was thirty baiocchi, while the piastra, the Italian equivalent of the German thaler, was 105 baiocchi (3½ testone). The reverse motto, "MELIVS EST DARE QVAM ACCIPERE," is the well known, "It is better to give than to receive."
