Papal States (847-855) denaro Ber-26
This specimen was lot 2015 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €3,050 (about US$3,678 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN, KIRCHENSTAAT/VATIKAN, Leo IV. 847-855, und Lothar I. 840-855. Denaro, o. J. (um 850), Rom. +HLOTHARIVS Im Feld IMP-Monogramm, oben eine Kugel und unten zwei Kugeln//+ ·SCS· PETRVS Im Feld LEOPA-Monogramm. RR Sehr schön. (papal States, Leo IV, 847-855, undated silver penny from about 850, Rome mint. Rare, very fine.)"
This denaro or silver penny belongs to the Dark Ages, when barbarians roamed Europe, pillaging and burning. It would be the sole silver coin emitted by the popes until the introduction of the grosso (worth four pennies) in the late thirteenth century.
