This specimen was lot 392 in Goldberg sale 136 (Los Angeles, September 2023), where it sold for $51,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Countermarked 1799 U.S. Dollar (Circa 1812-1820). Renfrewshire, John McLean, Merchant of Paisley. Two McLean oval counterstamps on United States 1799 9 over 8 Bust Dollar. The countermarks read: J.Mclean - Coll. St.Paisley, 5 (Shillings)/3 (pence) within a beaded oval circle. Only 4 examples of countermark are known, and this is the only known example on a United States Dollar. Exceedingly Rare. NGC graded EF-40. Goldberg's Auction 59, lot 3829. The Peh Family Collection." Scotland in the early nineteenth century was tearing into the Industrial Revolution and manufacturers were eager for coin to facilitate trade. As the Royal Mint could not keep up, many private issues appeared. Spanish dollars circulated freely and many of these were countermarked; the SCWC records over a hundred different countermarks. Today they are all rare.
