Steve Album Auction 53, lot 1218

This specimen was lot 1218 in Steve Album Auction 53 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "OMAN: Qaboos bin Said, 1970-2020, AR 20 ryals, 1971/AH1391, medallic issue: mosque; hairlined, mintage of only 4,000 pieces, Proof, R, ex Dr. Wolfgang Schuster Collection. These issues, inscribed STATE OF OMAN, were issued by the exiled government of Imam Ghalib Ibn Ali in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. The Imam has been in exile since 1955." Ghalib bin Ali ruled as imam of Oman 1954-59, when he was ousted by the sultan of Muscat and Oman. He lived in exile in Saudi Arabia until his death in 2009.
