Nurnberg (1688)-DSD thaler Dav-5664
This specimen was lot 3182 in Sincona sale 39 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 5,500 CHF (about US$6,596 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Nurnberg, Stadt, Taler o. J. (1688). Sogenannter Rathaustaler (von D. S. Dockler). Noris sitzt vor dem Rathaus mit geschlossenen Türen. Rv. Stadtansicht von Südosten. Selten. Gutes vorzüglich. Rauher Originalrand. (Germany, city of Nuremberg, undated thaler of the city hall. Rare. Good extremely fine. Rough Original rim.)"
While the Nuremberg thalers of the Thirty Years War (especially Dav-5647) are common, this one is rare. This design superseded a similar one by PH Müller (Dav-5663), whose dies broke after striking about a thousand pieces.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 29.18 g.
Catalog reference: Dav-5664; Kellner 261. Slg. Erlanger 631, KM 204.
