Nijmegen 1565 daalder Dav-8548
This specimen was lot 1107 in Jean Elsen sale 115 (Brussels, December 2012) where it sold for €600 (about US$916 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, NIJMEGEN, AR daalder van 30 stuiver, 1565, Met Nederlandse legenden. Droit: NA KO' PHS PENIN' G' GEHAL' DAL' V' XXX STV' Leeuw n.l. met wapenschild. Muntmeesterteken: drie gekruiste tinhaken. Revers: DER STADT NIMEGEN MVNT INT IAER 1565 Gekroond stadswapen. Zeer Zeldzaam. Iets zwak. Ex HSA 1052. Zeer Fraai. (city of Nijmegen, daalder of thirty stuvers/écu of thirty sols of 1565, with Dutch legends. Obverse: Lion to left, bearing shield; mintmaster's mark: three crossed keys; reverse: crowned eagle bearing city arms. Very rare, very fine.)"
Nijmegen, just south of Arnhem, is now part of Gelderland. Coins were issued for Nijmegen throughout the seventeenth century but are scarce compared to the issues of Holland or Utrecht.
