This specimen is from a one year type. It is the first issue of this denomination since 1912. Nicaragua, never prosperous, suffered severely in the earthquake of 1972 and the subsequent incompetent and corrupt response by the Somoza regime. In 1979, the Somozas were overthrown by the Sandinistas, an event which led to the notorious Iran-Contra affair.
Recorded mintage: 20,000,000 plus 40,000 proofs.
