Newfoundland SB620-72199r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72199 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 10 Cents, 1942-C. Ottawa Mint. NGC MS-64. Mostly brilliant in the centers with enchanting orange, blue and burgundy tone at the edges." This specimen is a common date of a type struck in Ottawa, Canada, for the colony of Newfoundland 1938-47. Canada debased her silver dimes from .925 to .800 in 1920 but Newfoundland did not follow suit until 1945. Newfoundland was admitted into the Dominion of Canada in 1949 and her separate coinage ceased. As a class, Newfoundland coinage is scarcer than equivalent Canadian coinage but collector demand for it is lower so it is often cheaper.

Recorded mintage: 293,736.

Specification: 2.35 g, 0.925 fine silver, designed by Percy Metcalfe.

Catalog reference: KM 20.
