New Zealand 1950 shilling

Stack's Bowers 2014 ANA sale, lot 1319

This specimen was lot 1319 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. Shilling, 1950. PCGS PROOF-64 CAMEO Secure Holder. Lustrous and attractive. From the Kevin Tierney Collection." New Zealand did not receive her own coinage until 1933, British coins being used heretofore. Issue of pennies and half pennies did not begin until 1940. This type, with the revised obverse legend "KING GEORGE THE SIXTH," was minted 1948-52. All dates are common in worn condition but proofs are rare.

Recorded mintage: 600,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 5.65 g, copper-nickel, 23.62 mm diameter.
