Sincona sale 5, lot 44

This specimen was lot 44 in Sincona sale 5 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 90,000 CHF (about US$110,745 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Neuchâtel Marie de Nemours (1694-1707). Doppelpistole 1694. Av. MARIA· DG· PR· SVP· – NOVICASTRI (Blume). Brustbild mit Haube und Kopftuch nach rechts. Rv. OCVLI· DOMINI· SVPER· IVSTOS· I694 · Vierfeldiges, gekröntes Wappen. Äusserst selten, nur 3 bekannte Exemplare bis dato. Winz. Rdf. Kabinettstück. Fast FDC. Exemplar der Sammlung Iklé (1911). Lot 825. (Switzerland, canton of Neuchâtel, Marie de Nemours (1694-1707), double pistole of 1694. Obverse: reverse: crowned, quartered arms. Extremely rare, three specimens known, choice uncirculated. From the Iklé collection (1911), lot 825.)"

The SCWC lists this type as very rare. It was the first double pistole struck since 1618.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 15.28 g, 0.900 fine gold, .442 troy oz AGW; this specimen is 13,44 g.
