Netherlands East Indies 1926 cent
This specimen was lot 1159 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES: Wilhelmina, 1890-1948, AE cent, 1926, unpublished proof date, a wonderful example! PCGS graded Proof 64 RD, RR." The Netherlands East Indies started out in the seventeenth century as a few trading stations in Java and the Moluccas. By 1900, the Dutch had conquered all the profitable parts and the empire was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. However, their establishment of schools for the natives led to the rise of an educated elite eager for independence. This type was struck in substantial quantities 1914, 1916, 1919-20, 1926 and 1929 and only the proofs are rare.
Recorded mintage: 10,000,000 plus proofs, the lowest mintage date.
