This specimen was lot 71821 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Kingdom of the Netherlands. Cent, 1909. Utrecht Mint; privy mark: broadaxe and star. Wilhelmina. NGC MS-64 Red Brown. A dazzling near-Gem that depicts full cartwheel luster on both faces and ample mint red nicely mottled with chocolat[e]y violet color." This type was struck 1855-60, 1896-99, 1901-02, 1907-09, 1912. It is common but proofs are rare. The 1909 is a better date. The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. By 1900, the Dutch had conquered the profitable parts and the empire was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One.

Recorded mintage: 7,500,000 + proofs.

Specification: 4.8 g, copper, 23 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-307.2.
