Netherlands 1803 silver ducat
The first specimen was lot 1346 in Jean Elsen sale 133 (Brussels, June 2017), where it sold for €80 (about US$106 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, De Bataafse Republiek (1795-1806), AR zilveren dukaat, 1803, Utrecht. Met kort zwaard. Vlekjes. Zeer Fraai. (Batavian republic, 1795-1806, silver ducat of 1803, Utrecht mint, with short sword. Very fine.)"
In 1795 the revolutionary armies of France invaded and occupied the United Provinces and reorganized it into the puppet Batavian Republic, which survived until 1806, when Napoleon installed his brother Louis on the newly contrived throne of the Kingdom of Holland, which lasted only until 1810. After Napoleon's fall in 1814, William I, of the old house of Orange, was made king. The second specimen was lot 584 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,
"BATAAFSE REPUBLIEK 1795 - 1806. Zilveren dukaat. 1803 Staande ridder met zwaard en provinciaal wapen aan lint. Kz. gekroond generaliteitswapen tussen jaartal. TYPE I e provincie UTRECHT met TRAI. in het omschrift. Mt. stadsschild. Kabelrand., SilverRidder met lang zwaard tot aan de rand. NGC AU58. Prachtig. (Batavian Republic, 1795-1806, silver ducat of 1803. Obverse: standing knight with long sword and provincial arms; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality divides the date, mintmark city arms; cabled edge. Graded NGC AU-58, Extremely fine.)"
Recorded mintage: 6,282,870 (includes Utrecht, Holland and Gelderland for 1795-1806).
