This specimen is the first coin issued by Nepal as part of the F.A.O. series and the only coin of that denomination. The king shown here, Mahendra Bir Bikram, died in 1971 and was succeeded by his son, Birendra Bir Bikram, who, in 2001, was murdered by his son, the Crown Prince. That scandal, plus the regime's inability to quell a Maoist insurgency, led to the abolition of the monarchy soon after.
Recorded mintage: 1,000,000.
Specification: 15.8 g, 0.600 fine silver, .300 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 794.
