Naples and Sicily 1818 120 grana Dav-169
This specimen was lot 1629 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €140 (about US$194 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, NAPLES et SICILE, Ferdinand Ier, roi des Deux-Siciles (1816-1825), AR 120 grana, 1818. Grande tête. 1818 avec point. Nettoyé. Coup sur la tranche. (Italy, kingdom of Naples and Sicily, Ferdinand I, king, 1816-25, silver 120 grana of 1818. large head, date with dot. Cleaned, edge nick, Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1817-18. The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was annexed to Italy in 1860 but remains poor, backward and corrupt. Montenegro notes thirteen varieties of the large head shown here and eleven of the small head type (Dav-170).
