Naples SB818-21248r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21248 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Naples. 4 Ducati, 1763-IA/CC R. Ferdinando IV di Borbone (1759-1816). NGC MS-66. A magnificent example, delicately complimented by apricot tone, with prodigious amounts of luster provided by wide open fields that lack marks or abrasions. A CONDITION RARITY at this level, and a coin that is sure to attract followers as it heads to auction." Charles II, the last Hapsburg king of Spain, was also king of Naples and Sicily. After his death the area passed out of the hands of the Spanish crown, only to be reconquered by them in the 1730's. Ferdinand IV was the third son of Charles III, king of Spain 1759-88 and the younger brother of Charles IV. This type was struck 1760-67 and is priced quite low in the SCWC. Despite the four ducati denomination, it is not a true four ducat coin, having only enough gold for about one and a half ducats.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 5.86 g, 0.906 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Gig-34a; Mont-168. Fr-847, KM 171 (formerly C73).
