Jean Elsen sale 162, lot 1621
JE162-1621r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1621 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,525 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, NAPLES, Ferdinand IV, 1er règne (1759-1799), AV 6 ducati, 1762 IA. D/ B. dr. à d. R/ Écu orné et couronné. (Italy, kingdom of Naples, Ferdinand IV, first reign, 1759-99, gold six ducati of 1762. Obverse: draped bust right; reverse: ornate crowned arms. Very Fine/Extremely Fine.)"

Charles II, the last Hapsburg king of Spain, was also king of Naples and Sicily. After his death the area passed out of the hands of the Spanish crown, only to be reconquered by them in the 1730's. Ferdinand IV was the third son of Charles III, king of Spain 1759-88 and the younger brother of Charles IV. This type was struck 1760-67 and is priced quite low in the SCWC. Despite the six ducati denomination, it is not a true six ducat coin, having only enough gold for about two and a half ducats.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 8.79 g, 0.906 fine gold, 27.5 mm diameter, this specimen 8,80 g.

Catalog reference: KM 167 (formerly KM C45), P.R. 5; M.I.R. 352/2; Fr-846.
