SB125-39016r.jpg

This specimen was lot 39016 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Naples. 120 Grana, 1748. Naples Mint. Carlo VII (future Charles III of Spain). PCGS VF-25." The SCWC notes that 12 carlini = 6 tari = 1 piastra, where a piastra is roughly equal to a peso. Charles II, the last Hapsburg king of Spain, was also king of Naples and Sicily. After his death the area passed out of the hands of the Spanish crown, only to be reconquered by them in the 1730's. Charles III, king of Naples and Sicily, gave up his crown to become king of Spain on the death of his half brother, Ferdinand VI, in 1759. This type of 1748-49 is fairly inexpensive.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 25.61 g, 0.961 fine silver, 40 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dav-1399; KM-150 (formerly KM C23a).
