Künker sale 400, lot 527

This specimen was lot 527 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €20,000 (about US$25,946 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN, NEAPEL UND SIZILIEN, Ludwig XII. von Frankreich, 1501-1503. Ducato o. J. Neapel. LVDO ° FRAN ° REGNI Q NEAP ° R Gekrönte Büste r. mit umgelegtem Mantel//PERDAM ° BABILLONIS ° NOMEN Gekrönter Wappenschild. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Gut ausgeprägt, min. gewellt, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Italy, Naples, Louis XII of France, 1501-03, undated ducat, Naples mint. Obverse: mantled and crowned bust. Extremely rare, especially in this quality. Well struck, slightly wavy, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Louis XII spent several years in Italy with Milan as his base. He managed to occupy Naples in 1501 but was forced to yield it to the Spanish in 1503, who held it until the extinction of the Hapsburgs in 1700.
