Sincona sale 5, lot 529

This specimen was lot 529 in Sincona sale 5 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 4,000 CHF (about US$4,922 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIEN Namur, Grafschaft Philipp V. von Spanien, 1700-1712. Patagon 1709. Gekreuzte Knotenstäbe, in den Winkeln Krone, Ordenskleinod und zwei gekrönte Monogramme. Rv. Gekröntes Wappen, umgeben von der Vliesordenskette. Äusserst selten. Winz. Rdf. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (County of Namur, Philip V of Spain, 1700-12, patagon of 1709. Obverse: Burgundian cross with crowns in angles, Order of the Golden Fleece below and two "PV" monograms; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Extremely rare, slightly weak strike, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The type was struck for Philip V, who succeeded Charles II as king of Spain in 1700. His throne was challenged by the Austrian pretender, the archduke Charles, sparking the War of the Spanish Succession, a good part of which was fought in the Spanish Netherlands (now Belgium). Philip managed to hold on to his Spanish throne but was forced to surrender Brabant and Namur to the Austrians. This coin is among his last issues for the Netherlands.
