SB925-76039r.jpg

This specimen was lot 76039 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mysore. Rupee, AM 1219 Year 9 (1790). Patan (Seringapatan) Mint. Tipu Sultan. NGC MS-64. A sharp, perfectly centered beauty preserved in nearly-Gem condition. Extremely crisp detail with a lovely argent gray tone." The Indian state of Mysore, under her rulers Haider Ali (1761-82) and Tipu Sultan (1782-99), was a serious thorn in the side of the British Raj. This type was struck years 4-10 and 13 and was accompanied by a half rupee (KM 125) and double rupee (KM 127). Patan is a common mint for Tipu but Mysore rupees are much rarer than Mughal rupees. Rupees were also struck at the Dharwar, Farrukhi, Nagar, Khurshed-Sawad and Kalikut mints.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 10.7-11.6 g, silver.

Catalog reference: KM-126.
