Stephen Album sale 50, lot 2504

This specimen was lot 2504 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $510. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Shah Alam II, 1759-1806, AR nazarana rupee, Shahjahanabad (Delhi), AH1220 year 48, border clockwise on obverse, counterclockwise on reverse, VF." This type was struck AH 1219-1221 and is quite scarce. Nazarana rupees are wider and thinner than ordinary rupees and by this type the Mughal Empire was in an advanced state of decay. Shah Alam II survived only because his neighbors, including the British, could not decide on who or what should replace him.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.44 g, silver, this specimen 11.14 g.

Catalog reference: KM-714.
