SB223-73610r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73610 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mughal Empire. Rupee, AH 1143 Year 13 (1731). Ahmadabad Mint. Muhammad Shah. PCGS AU-58. Quite tantalizing and attractive, this wholesome survivor presents a light amber gray tone with a charming degree of luster emanating from the fields. Any sign of wear, even on the peaks of the design, is difficult task to spot." The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control. This type is listed in the SCWC for 64 mints. The Ahmadabad mint struck this type during years 1-30 and is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.0-11.6 g, silver.

Catalog reference: KM-436.1.
