Steve Album sale 54, lot 2201

This specimen was lot 2201 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Muhammad Shah, 1719-1748, AR rupee, Kankurti, AH1052, old corrosion and cleaning on both sides, several shroff marks on edge, XF." The SCWC lists 69 mints for the type 436 rupee. The auctioneers report the date as AH 1052 (1642 AD), which is impossible for this ruler. The date on the obverse is garbled, so we are going with the regnal date 11 on the reverse, corresponding to AH 1142, which is one of the three known dates for this scarce mint (AH 1139/9, 1142/11 and 1149/xx). As the Mughal Empire crumbled, Kankurti became a feudatory of the nizam of Hyderabad.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.2-11.6 g, silver, this specimen 11.44 g.

Catalog reference: KM-436.35.
