Steve Album sale 51, lot 2613

This specimen was lot 2613 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $54. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Aurangzeb, 1658-1707, AE dam, Elichpur, AH(11)16, VF." Aurangzeb succeeded Shah Jahan and, after eliminating his brothers, expanded the empire to its maximum extent. However, his intolerance of Hinduism sowed the seed for later revolts. His successors were not able to cope with external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war and the empire broke up in the eighteenth century. Elichpur struck this style AH 1078/1 only but eleven other mints also contributed. One rupee was forty dams.
