Mughal Empire AH 1108/40 rupee KM-300.81
This specimen was lot 2614 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Aurangzeb, 1658-1707, AR rupee, Shahjahanabad (Delhi), AH1108 year 40, superb bold strike! NGC graded AU58." Aurangzeb succeeded Shah Jahan and, after eliminating his brothers, expanded the empire to its maximum extent. However, his intolerance of Hinduism sowed the seed for later revolts. His successors were not able to cope with external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war and the empire broke up in the eighteenth century. Shahjahanabad struck this style intermittently years 2-44 along with over one hundred other mints. This is the most common rupee of the reign.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specifications: 11.44 g, silver.
Catalog reference: KM-300.81.
