Steve Album sale 55, lot 661

This specimen was lot 661 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $15,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Shah Jahan I, 1628-1658, AR rupee, Ghoraghat (Goraghat), AH1037 year one (ahad), Extremely rare mint, Hijri date in small numerals at lower left reverse rim, regnal year in words in tiny letters lower left of obverse; 4 small banker's marks on the edge, no testmarks, excellent well-centered strike, VF-XF, RRR, ex Syed Rabbi Collection. The Ghorahghat mint, situated on the west bank of the Karatoya River in present-day Dinajpur district of Bangladesh, served as an important military and administrative outpost during the Mughal era. It played a significant role in the Bengal campaigns under Emperor Akbar, notably in 982 AH (1574 AD) when General Majnun Khan Qaqshal was dispatched toward Ghorahghat in pursuit of the fleeing Afghan Sultan of Bengal, Daud Khan Karrani. The strategic location of Ghorahghat-at the southwestern frontier of the Koch kingdom-made it a critical gateway to Bihar and northern India. Upon his accession in AH 1037 (1628 AD), Emperor Shah Jahan replaced Fidai Khan (a governor under Jahangir) with Qasim Khan Juyini as Subahdar of Bengal. This minting likely reflects early administrative and military assertion in the region following Shah Jahan's coronation." This scarce type was struck year one only. This example realized nineteen times the catalog value.
