CNG sale Triton XXVII, lot 1137

This specimen was lot 1137 in CNG sale Triton XXVII (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $70,437.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA, Mughal Empire. Nur al-Din Muhammad Jahangir. AH 1014-1037 / AD 1605-1627. AV Mohur. Zodiac Type (month of Ardibihisht), Class A. Agra mint. Dually dated AH 1030 and RY 16 (22 April-21 May AD 1621). Constellation of Tora/Vrishabha (Taurus the Bull): zebu standing right; radiate sun behind / zar zewar dar Agra ruye yaft az Jahangir Shah Akbar Shah (Received ornament on gold at Agra from Jahangir Shah [son of] Akbar Shah) in Persian verse; RY and AH dates to left. Lightly toned, traces of deposits in devices, evidence of having been mounted. VF. Ex Spink USA 355 (19 January 2020), lot 264; Album FPL 160 (April 2000), no. 41." Jahangir scandalized the strict Muslims of his court by issuing this series of mohurs featuring the twelve animals of the zodiac. Always rare, they bring stratospheric prices when they appear at auction. Unusually, this auction also included a Gemini mohur (Fr-764).

Recorded mintage: unknown.
