SB1122-75164r.jpg
Agra in 1792, north of Gwalior

This specimen was lot 75164 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mughal Empire. Square Rupee, AH 1023 Year 8 (1614). Agra Mint. Muhammad Jahangir. NGC AU Details--Damage. Despite the test mark damage, the present example delivers a crisp strike and much commendability." This type, struck at Agra years 6 thru 13, is distinctive because it is square. It is priced almost six times that of the later round type (KM 149.1) and this example realized nearly three times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.2-11.5 g, silver.

Catalog reference: KM-147.2.
