Mozambique (1851) 2-1/2 maticais
The first specimen was lot 1454 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "MOZAMBIQUE. 2-1/2 Maticais, ND (1851). Maria II. NGC AU-50. A well struck rectangular ingot with deeply punched obverse star and clearly visible denomination on the reverse. Some adjustment marks also noted on the reverse. The surfaces are a dark, somewhat pale gold color." The second specimen was lot 1479 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,
"MOCAMBIQUE, Maria II. von Portugal, 1834-1853. 2 1/2 Matical o. J. (1835), Selten. Sehr schön. Gereinigt. (Mozambique, Maria II, 1834-53, undated 2½ maticais, Rare, Very fine, Cleaned.)"
Portuguese issues for her colonies was rather scanty in the nineteenth century. The SCWC does not state but this is likely a local issue produced to overcome the usual shortage of coin. A smaller 1¼ maticais is also noted.
