Morocco AH 1313-Pa 5 dirhams
This specimen was lot 43747 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MOROCCO. 5 Dirhams, AH 1313 (1895). PCGS AU-53 Gold Shield. Charcoal toning in the fields, bringing the devices into high relief. Strong underlying luster and no distracting marks." The ruler Abdul al-Aziz succeeded his father Hassan I in AH 1311. He continued having coins struck in Paris and added issues struck in London and Berlin. The denominations were mazunas and dirhams, with 1 dirham = 50 mazunas. The 'crown' denomination was one rial, which was equal to ten dirhams. During this time, the ruler was honored on the coins not directly by name, but by a word or expression that alluded to him. This type was struck in Paris AH 1299 and 1309-1314.
