In 1956, France evacuated her colony of Morocco, return it to the independence the kingdom had enjoyed prior to 1912. Mohammed V, ruler since since 1927, resumed the royal title his father Yusuf had held. The French franc was dropped in favor of the dirham and thirty-three million of these silver coins were minted at Paris. It is the only silver coin struck for circulation after independence.
