Jean Elsen sale 138, lot 1036

This specimen was lot 1036 in Jean Elsen sale 139 (Brussels, December 2018), where it sold for €125 (about US$167 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MONACO, Rainier III (1949-2005), AR 100 francs, 1974. 25e anniversaire de règne. Piéfort en argent. Ecrin. Dans la pochette scellée de la Monnaie de Paris. Flan poli. (principality of Monaco, Rainier III, 1949-2005, silver hundred francs of 1974, twenty-fifth anniversary of the reign, silver piedfort. Proof.)"

This type was struck at the Paris mint for the principality of Monaco during the reign of Rainier III (r. 1949-2005) on the 25th anniversary of his reign. It does not seem to have legal tender status as it is consigned to Unusual World Coins along with the accompanying 1000, 2000 and 3000 francs in platinum and gold.

Recorded mintage: 25,000.

Specification: 37.04 g, 0.999 fine silver.
