Sincona sale 59, lot 1793

This specimen was lot 1793 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,332 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MONACO, Rainier III. 1949-2005. 20 Francs 1950, Paris. Piefort Probe (Essai) in Gold. Selten. Nur 325 Exemplare geprägt. Vorzüglich-FDC. (principality of Monaco, Rainier III, 1949-2005, twenty francs of 1950, Paris mint, piefort in gold. Rare. Only 325 pieces struck, Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

This is a pattern for a design eventually issued in aluminum bronze. Pieforts were also issued in silver. Ten, fifty and 100 francs exist with this design.

Recorded mintage: 500,000 in aluminum bronze plus more in silver plus 500 in gold.
